Incredible Scenery, Natural Wonders
Welcome to Highlands Plateau, North Carolina!

About Highlands Plateau, North Carolina Real EstateThe Highlands Plateau, located in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, is a wonderful place to spend some quiet peaceful days, away from the traffic, phone calls, and hustle and bustle of city life. Located just 125 miles from the suburbs of Atlanta, the Highlands Plateau is ideally suited for the weekend getaway, second home investment, executive retreat. Greenville, S.C. is just 85 miles from our village, and Asheville is a mere 65 miles to the north east.

The Town of Highlands itself sits atop the plateau, at an average altitude of 4,118 feet above sea level. The Benchmark on Main Street measures the altitude there at 3835 feet, while just a few blocks away, Satulah Mountain crests at 4,543 feet. The summer population varies due to the many 2nd home families returning for from two weeks to six months. Estimates range from about 20,000 to close to 30,000. The year round population is about 3000 for the mailing area of Highlands and Scaly Mountain.

The Highlands Plateau region boasts some of the most spectacular vistas in the U.S. The Highland's area of Macon County is a 4,000 foot plateau with dominating mountain peaks of bare granite and heath balds summits. Two mountain tops in the area offer stupendous views, Whiteside Mountain and Satulah Mountain. Both mountain summits are accessible by short easy trails. You can reach Whiteside Mountain off US 64, between the town of Cashiers in Jackson County and the town of Highlands in Macon County. Satulah Mountain can be reached by going south on State Highway 28 at the intersection of US 64 and State Highway 28. Satulah Mountain is unique because it is classified as a heath bald. The dwarfed white oak and dwarfed white pine on the summit can be as old as 200 years and no bigger then 10 inches in diameter. Interestingly, because The Highlands Plateau is connected with Canada via a great land bridge, Canadian-type plants are easy to find in the area

The Blue Ridge escarpment is the steep slope that separates North Carolina's Piedmont plateau from the Highlands Plateau. A steep difference in elevation has been eroded by rainfall runoff into a half-moon-shaped indentation in the Blue Ridge through which five major rivers make their way towards the sea. These rivers have cut deep gorges into the escarpment, which are known collectively as the Jocassee Gorges after one of the principal streams. Annual rainfalls in the heavily forested Jocassee Gorges region can range upward of 100 inches - the generally accepted definition of a rain forest. In the temperate zone of the United States, this is the only rain forest east of the Olympic peninsula in the Pacific Northwest.

The Jocassee Gorges region is one of the most scenic places in the State of North Carolina. It is a land of frequent rainfall, powerful rivers and spectacular waterfalls. The unique topography of this region has created climates and forests that are quite different from those of the surrounding area. The lush vegetation, moderate temperatures, and incredible rainfall are comparable to those of tropical rain forests, and, strange as it may seem, tropical species of bryophytes and other plants are found here far from their nearest neighbors in the Caribbean and central America. The Jocassee gorges are home to more than 60 species of rare and endemic plants, making the area a place of study for many botanists. Gorges State Park, which lies in Transylvania, Jackson, and Macon counties and connects to parkland in northern South Carolina, has made the gorges considerably more accessible since its opening in 1999.

The Highlands area of North Carolina is also treasured as one of the most beautiful places in the country to see waterfalls. The Highlands are completely surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest which covers an area of about 116,000 acres and is a temperate rain forest. The abundance of water keeps the area cooler in the summer months than southern cities. The area is known as the "Land of Waterfalls" and is one of the most unique geological areas in the world with granite walls and waterfalls. The highest waterfall is the Whitewater Falls. It is the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains and is just south of Cashiers. It is absolutely spectacular in the fall season with the change in the leaves. The falls plunge 411 feet and much of the area receives few visitors and so is wild and undeveloped but there are a number of overlooks to view the falls.

Highlands Plateau residents, whether full or part time, are truly blessed to live and play in this most awe-inspiring setting. Maybe this is where you belong, as well.
